STOCKMAN
We seek an experienced individual to conduct good husbandry practices and assist with maintaining the health associated with the maintenance and protection of livestock and horses at the Department of Agriculture compound.
The Post holder will carry out the humane slaughter of livestock under the direct supervision of the Senior Slaughterman and under the guidelines and procedures manual for the humane slaughter of animals.
Knowledge & Experience
- High school graduate with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in Agriculture
- Must possess a genuine interest in animals
- Minimum of three years’ experience working with and handling livestock, particularly cattle and goats
Skills
- Cayman Islands driver’s license – Group 4 level (required)
- Familiarity with the signs of good health and ill-health in livestock
- Ability to work independently and use initiative
- Must be a team player
- Must possess good communication skills
- Must possess clear and accurate record keeping skills
- Familiarity with the signs of heat stress in livestock
- Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet computer programmes will be an asset
- Familiarity with pesticides, pesticide application, and safe use practices for pasture maintenance
Main duties and responsibilities
- Feed and water all livestock and horses at the Department as directed by the Livestock Extension Officer, Veterinarian(s), or designate(s)
- Assist in the care and treatment of livestock and horses on and off the DoA compound. Liaising with vet and other staff concerning the health and welfare of stock as necessary
- Assist with livestock pick-up, slaughter and carcass delivery at the Abattoir
- Observe, record and report activities related to health, production and reproduction of livestock and horses at the Department
- Assist the animal control unit with the collection and care of stray livestock and horses
Preference will be given to qualified Caymanians and holders of Caymanian Status
