The Cayman Islands Government is currently inviting applications for the following post within the Legislative Drafting Department of the Portfolio of Legal Affairs:

Senior Legislative Counsel (Drafting)

The Senior Legislative Counsel will be responsible for the drafting of clear, unambiguous and relevant legislation, both primary and secondary. The Senior Legislative Counsel will analyse all legislative policies assigned to him or her and ensure that such policies are translated, by way of legislative drafting, into legislation to enable Government to carry out its functions.

The Senior Legislative Counsel will advise Ministers on the methods available to achieve their policies, Government Departments on statutory interpretation, and advise the Attorney General, other Official Members and Ministers on proposals for legislation. They will also assist with the supervision of team employees.

Applicants must:

  • be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Attorney-at-Law of at least seven (7) years call to the bar in a Commonwealth jurisdiction; and
  • possess a diploma or Masters of Law in legislative drafting.

It is essential that applicants have at least seven (7) years of post-graduate experience, at least five (5) of which having been spent drafting legislation in a Government Department, Statutory Authority or other public body. Applicants should have an extensive professional knowledge of Caymanian statute law and the statute laws of the UK and other jurisdictions, current legal knowledge, and considerable professional knowledge of Cayman and UK legislative practice. Applicants should also have experience in supervising staff, with relevant management training and/or qualifications.
