The Portfolio of the Civil Service is accepting applications on behalf of the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, for the post of:

Coast Guard Recruit (CGR)

The post holders will be required to acquire the skills and competencies of an Ordinary Seaman in the CICG. Having successfully met the recruitment and selection criteria for entry into the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) each candidate will undergo 8-weeks of basic training, during which they will be evaluated as to their suitability for continuation of service within the Coast Guard. Upon completion of the 8 week basic training and assessment each Candidate will be given the designation of Coast Guard Recruit and be attached to one of the various operational detachments within the CICG, where they will continue to learn and develop their professional competence and proficiency within each of the core job functions learned during basic training.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

The post holders will be Caymanians 18 – 35 years of age and will possess a High School diploma or equivalent and be able to successfully pass a basic numeracy and literacy test. Additionally they must pass a physical endurance and fitness test of running one (1) mile in 13 mins, 25 sit-ups and 25 push-ups both within one minute or less, complete a 200-yard swim within 12 mins and tread water unassisted for 10 mins. Due to the nature of the role candidates cannot be colour blind, or legally deaf in either ear.

Preference Will Be Given to Those Who:

  • Have successfully graduated the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps or another recognised Cadet or Officer training programme designed for young persons between 14 to 18 yrs of age.
  • Have previously served in or with a Maritime Law Enforcement Unit, the Royal Navy, or a Navy/Coast Guard from one of the various countries forming the Commonwealth of Nations.
  • Have at least 2yrs current work experience or who have worked on-board a local commercially operated vessel, operating in the Cayman Islands, within the last 5yrs.
  • Have at least 2yrs work experience on-board a commercially operated ocean-going vessel, within the last 5yrs.
  • Possess a small craft (13.6m / 45ft.) operators' certificate or operators permit.
  • Have previous maritime experience as boat/deck hand.
  • Possess valid scuba Diver/Master/Instructor certification.
  • Possess a marine engineering certificate or who possess prior experience in the maritime engineering field.
